An AI phone assistant for Switzerland needs more than a “German supported” label. It must understand your callers' dialect, names, locations and language switches well enough to complete a defined task, and provide a useful alternative when it is uncertain. The decisive outcome is the record or action after the call: a correct callback number, a correctly matched address or a genuinely confirmed appointment.

A supplier's Swiss German claim is therefore a starting point for testing, not proof of performance across every dialect and telephone connection. This guide explains how to build an acceptance set for your business. It proposes a method; it does not report a completed modernagents comparison trial or measured recognition rate.

Key takeaways

The main points for testing an AI phone assistant with Swiss German calls are:

  • A supplier's Swiss German claim is a starting point for testing, not proof of performance across every dialect and telephone connection.
  • Test recognition, understanding and voice separately, and score the business result rather than every word.
  • The proposed acceptance set covers location, dialect, correction, language switch and disruption, each with an example task and what to score.
  • Approve the scope that the evidence supports, and repeat the same acceptance set when the recognition model, conversation rules or telephone configuration changes.

Why test recognition, understanding and voice separately?

Three capabilities. Demonstrations can blur three different capabilities: recognising speech, processing its meaning and producing an appropriate spoken answer. A voice with Swiss pronunciation may sound pleasant while recognition of regional callers remains unreliable. Conversely, an assistant can understand dialect and respond clearly in standard German.

Documented model support. Google Cloud's official Speech-to-Text language list includes German for Switzerland under de-CH for certain region and model combinations. That documents available model support, not equal performance for every dialect or your telephone conditions. Ask the supplier which actual recognition service and model it uses.

Separate providers. Also establish whether speech recognition and speech output use different providers. A general multilingual feature does not demonstrate that the system can switch language during a conversation while preserving dates, contact details and business rules.

02 / 09

Which dialects, names, addresses and language switches belong in the test?

Speakers. Choose speakers who reasonably reflect the callers you expect. Include regional variants, standard German, different speaking speeds and relevant other languages. A business primarily serving Zurich first needs a useful local test; that evidence cannot support a broad claim about all of Switzerland.

Test data. Use synthetic personal and contact details with realistic types of request. Include short and long names, similar street names, building numbers with letters and callback numbers. Add corrections: the caller gives one number and changes it while the assistant is confirming it.

The table lists five test dimensions for Swiss German calls, each with an example task and what to score.

Test dimension Example task What to score
Location Capture a street and building number Correct stored location
Dialect Describe a request without switching language Correct category and next action
Correction Change a telephone number during confirmation Use only the corrected number
Language switch Start in German and continue in English Preserve information and rules
Disruption Background noise or an interruption Useful clarification or fallback

Limits of a small set. A small test can reveal failures, but it cannot establish a representative success rate for every future call. Record the size and composition of the set so later reporting does not claim more than the evidence supports.

Connection path. Include the actual connection path wherever possible. A browser microphone on a quiet desk is not the same as a mobile caller near traffic. Keep those test conditions distinguishable so that a change in equipment is not mistaken for an improvement in the assistant.

How do you score a Swiss German test call?

Fields before wording. An imperfect verbatim transcript may still produce a correct callback task. A fluent transcript can contain the wrong house number. Score critical fields and actions separately from conversational style and transcription quality.

Synthetic case: A caller requests an appointment, corrects the time from half past two to half past three and asks to be called on a different number from the incoming caller ID. The assistant must preserve the correction, clarify any ambiguity and store the explicitly requested callback number.

Test record. A useful test record includes the expected outcome, the actual stored values, clarification questions and the final state. Classify contact, date and address errors separately. This prevents a high average score for voice quality from hiding a serious error that makes the task unusable.

Booking scenarios. For booking scenarios, inspect the destination calendar as well. A spoken statement that an appointment has been made does not establish that it was saved, saved once or saved at the corrected time. The acceptance evidence should show the end-to-end result.

What should the assistant do when it is uncertain?

Name the uncertainty. The assistant should identify the specific uncertainty. “I did not clearly understand the building number” is more useful than restarting the whole questionnaire. Limit unsuccessful attempts and then offer a callback or a reachable person.

Confirmation. Confirmation needs to allow a real correction. Reading a long number quickly immediately before ending the call provides little opportunity to respond. Use manageable groups and wait for the caller. For difficult spellings, another approved contact method may work better than repeated spoken attempts.

Language of the fallback. Specify the language available in the fallback process. Transferring an English-speaking caller from a multilingual assistant to a team unable to help in English does not automatically resolve the communication problem. The receiving staff need enough context to decide how to continue.

How do you test the Swiss number and telephone route?

Number and forwarding. Number provision, forwarding and porting are different services. Decide whether you will keep an existing Swiss number, forward it to a destination or change telephone providers. BAKOM explains Swiss telephone numbering. Confirm implementation and forwarding charges with the provider responsible for your line.

Real networks. Call from the networks and countries your customers actually use. Check caller ID, withheld numbers, concurrent calls and the return to the previous service during an outage. A successful web demonstration says little about whether your production telephone route behaves the same way.

Transfer to a person. When transferring to a person, both the connection and relevant context need to arrive. Establish whether the recipient receives a summary and what happens if they do not answer. “Transfer started” is a technical event, not evidence that a human accepted the call.

06 / 09

Which Swiss privacy and recording requirements should you review?

Processing in Switzerland and processing in the EU raise different contractual and data-flow questions. Ask for the services involved, locations, access arrangements and deletion paths. Treat audio, transcript and task content as separate data objects.

The Swiss data-protection authority explains conversation recording and the interaction between data-protection and criminal law. The exceptions described there do not give a general permission to record every business call for any purpose. Have the actual arrangement assessed for the organisation and its intended use.

07 / 09

Which scope can you approve after the test?

Document the languages, tasks, telephone routes and failure cases you tested. Approval might cover callback intake and practical information while direct appointment booking remains outside scope. That is an operational boundary, not a reason to make the documentation vague.

Repeat the same acceptance set when the recognition model, conversation rules or telephone configuration changes. Add cases arising from observed problems without unnecessarily copying real customer information into testing tools. The next useful step is a small, traceable set of your own calls, with expected results and an accountable person who assesses deviations.
